Thailand Chiang Mai Impact Expedition

An educational experience with a difference. Your students will support wildlife conservation and work on community development projects.

Our impact expedition nurtures global citizenship and gives teenager students the opportunity to develop cultural sensitivity, communication, conservation and community development skills.

Travel to the mountains of Northern Thailand, where you'll be living and working within a traditional Karen community in a village five hours from Chiang Mai. 

Here, you’ll collaborate with local community members to support wildlife conservation and community development projects.

Thailand Chiang Mai Impact Expedition

Day 1: Arrive in Thailand

Your school group will arrive at Chiang Mai Airport where you’ll meet your tour leader who will be with you for the duration of your expedition. You’ll start with an orientation discussion about what to expect and an introduction to Thailand.

Day 2: Orientation

Start the day with a health and safety briefing, followed by training where you’ll learn about our local projects and partnerships. As part of your training, you’ll learn how to prepare for your first expedition activities.

Day 3: Ethical Elephant Monitoring

You'll learn about animal behaviours, how to engage ethically with wildlife, and the ethical practices for monitoring elephant populations. Apply what you've learned when you go out on a hike to observe the elephants and collect data.

What to expect on a Thailand Chiang Mai Challenger Expedition

Students will assist with the monitoring of elephants that live in protected forests and contribute to a viable ecotourism program in the Huay Pakoot village.

Asian Elephant Conservation

Learn about Karen cultural traditions and the history of mahouts. You'll learn about the different conservation practices and the role elephants play in the community. As a group, you'll discuss the pros and cons of different types of elephant sanctuaries.

Rural Ecotourism

Using beads to make a bracelet, learn how to make a traditional piece of Karen jewellery. You'll become familiar with the traditional techniques involved, and discuss Karen customs and traditions while making your bracelet.

Traditional Thai Dinner

A Thai-style welcome dinner will act as an icebreaker for your group as you sample local cuisine together. Settle into your accommodation for the first night in Thailand. You’ll be sharing a room with your group throughout your trip.
