What Can You Expect

Visit the highest mountain in New Zealand, Mt.Cook at 3753 metres high, and enjoy a scenic boat ride on the Tasman Glacier terminal lake. See icebergs of every shape and size periodically tear away allowing you to touch and taste the 300-500 year old glacial crystals. Students will see steaming vents and hot springs, old lava flows and beautiful water-filled explosion craters when walking the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Students can discover more about glaciers that formed the fiords over 10,000 years ago when visiting Milford Sound for an up close look at the impressive crevices and waterfalls.

Mount Cook is located in Mt Cook National Park in the Southern Alps, the mountain range which runs the length of the South Island. The glaciers, rock pools and rugged environment offer a great opportunity for students to understand the geography of the region, learn about the formation of glaciers and the tectonic uplifting of the Pacific and Indo-Australian Plates. Students will also discover erosive forces in effect and how they shape the landscape over time.
