What to expect on a high school ski trip to Queenstown, New Zealand

West Moreton Anglican College Ski and Adventure Tour with Educating Adventures

New Zealand’s dramatic mountains, unique geography and distinct culture provide the backdrop to a trip full of adventure and interactive learning opportunities.

As the snow begins to fall and the resorts start opening across Queenstown, it's the perfect time to look back at one of our previous New Zealand Ski trips!

Back in September 2018, we had the pleasure of hosting West Moreton Anglican College in Queenstown New Zealand for a jam-packed 8 Day Ski and Adventure tour. We had excellent feedback from our school leader so much so that they have rebooked the same trip in September 2019 and this will be their 3rd in a row!

Once again EA has provided my students with the trip of the year and memories to last a lifetime!

Day 1 – Arrival

Flying into Queenstown is ranked one of the world’s most beautiful airport approaches from above, as you get a glimpse of New Zealand's stunning Southern Alps. West Moreton College flew in from Brisbane and stayed at the Queenstown Pinewood Lodge. The Queenstown Pinewood Lodge is fully equipped and able to cater for small to large groups with all units self-contained. They are a super friendly team and it’s centrally located which gives students the freedom to explore the township on their own.

Day 2-3 - Skiing at The Remarkables

It’s true what they say the early bird does get the worm, in this case, it means catching remarkable mountain sunrises! West Moreton students enjoyed their first two days skiing at the world-class resort The Remarkables Ski field, one of the highest resorts in the South Island! Transferred by private coach each student had 1.5 hours of group lesson each morning. NZSki's amazing instructors helped each student gain new skills and gave them the confidence to explore the awesome terrain The Remarkables has to offer. The group lessons are hosted by seasoned instructors who have tonnes of experience, teaching in different resorts all over the world. The improvements that can be made with expert instruction and good quality facilities are incredible!

Day 4 –Goldfields Jet and Skyline Queenstown

On day 4 West Moreton headed off for an adventure packed day in and around Queenstown; starting off with heading out to the Kawarau Gorge to enjoy a thrilling jet boat ride with Goldfields Jet. Goldfields Jet takes you down the beautiful Kawarau River, through the heart of one of New Zealand's most historic gold mining regions. After Goldfields Jet the students relished some free time to explore the bustling township, enjoying a mandatory stop at the Remarkable sweet shop before taking the gondola up to Skyline Queenstown.

At the top of the gondola, the students headed straight to the famous luge track which overlooks the Queenstown-Lakes district. The luge was followed by an epic sunset that provided a beautiful silhouette on the surrounding mountains. Before their sit down buffet dinner, West Moreton College were treated to a Maori culture show including the famous Kiwi Haka, this gave the students an insight to both the cultural practices and contemporary expression of the Maori people.

Day 5 -7 – More mountains, more skiing!

The last three days were spent taking in the fresh mountain air and exploring some of New Zealand's best skiing at Coronet Peak and Cardrona Alpine Resort. Each day up the mountain Educating Adventures provided a package for the students including transport, a full mountain lift pass, rental equipment and 1.5 hours of lessons each day. This was the perfect opportunity for the students to learn key skills and techniques from their instructors in the morning while giving them the time to go off and put those skills into practice in the afternoon! There’s nothing quite like spending time with your friends in the inspiring alpine environment.
