Visit the Colosseum, also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, is an oval amphitheatre in the centre of the city of Rome, Italy. Built of travertine limestone, tuff, and brick-faced concrete, it was the largest amphitheatre ever built at the time and held 50,000 spectators.
The Roman Forum is a rectangular forum (plaza) surrounded by the ruins of several important ancient government buildings at the centre of the city of Rome. Citizens of the ancient city referred to this space, originally a marketplace, as the Forum Magnum.
Its most famous eruption took place in the year 79 A.D., when the volcano Mount Vesuvius buried the ancient Roman city of Pompeii under a thick carpet of volcanic ash. The dust “poured across the land” like a flood, one witness wrote, and shrouded the city in “a darkness… like the black of closed and unlighted rooms.” Two thousand people died, and the city was abandoned for almost as many years.
An ancient city and one of the major centres of Greek civilisation was a military stronghold dominating much of southern Greece. The Bronze-age acropolis, or citadel, is one of the great cities of the Mycenaean civilization that played a vital role in developing classical Greek culture.
