An Interview with Chris Lyons, Geography Teacher at North London Collegiate School Singapore

From the Classroom to the Craters: A Geography Teacher’s Hawaiian Adventure

For Chris Lyons, a Geography teacher at North London Collegiate School in Singapore, the world has always been his classroom. After 16 years of teaching and leading international trips across destinations including New Zealand, Costa Rica, Iceland, Italy and the USA, there was one place that had remained firmly on his bucket list: Hawaii.

Recently, Chris and his students had the opportunity to explore the Hawaiian Islands on an unforgettable educational adventure. We caught up with him to hear about his journey, the challenges of planning an overseas trip, and why he believes international travel can be such a powerful learning experience.

A Lifelong Passion for Geography

Chris’s route into teaching was perhaps inevitable.

“I loved Geography growing up. I went on all the trips and knew I would probably end up as a Geography teacher at some point. I enjoy the fact that I get paid to talk about the world.”

Sixteen years later, that enthusiasm hasn’t faded. When asked why he loves teaching, Chris points to the variety, balance and subject matter that make every day rewarding.

“Every day is different. There are elements of both structure and freedom, which I like. And I also really just enjoy Geography.”

Why Hawaii?

Having organised numerous international trips over the years, Chris was always on the lookout for destinations that would inspire both students and staff.

“Hawaii has always been on my and my fellow Geography teachers’ bucket lists, so we thought, why not?”

The destination offered the perfect combination of natural wonders, geographical significance and unforgettable experiences. More importantly, it provided students with an opportunity to step outside their everyday environment and experience a completely different part of the world.

“Students can often grow up in very sheltered environments, unaware that a whole world exists outside their bubble. I like to get out of the classroom and help them see what’s out there.”

Finding the Right Support

Chris discovered Educating Adventures through a Google search while researching options for the trip. Although he had extensive experience leading international travel programmes, Hawaii presented a new challenge.

“Having never been to Hawaii before, I thought I best use the experts to ensure a smooth trip. International travel with students can be stressful as it is. Having someone on the end of the phone or email who can help or fix issues is always a bonus, as well as a dedicated guide on the trip itself.”

Highlights from Hawaii

Ziplining on the North Shore

“Ziplining along the Oahu North Shore was definitely one. The staff were very friendly and fun, and the views were incredible.”

Witnessing an Active Volcano

Another unforgettable experience was visiting Kīlauea with an expert guide. “Having a guided tour along Kilauea’s crater whilst the volcano is active was really interesting. The teachers may have enjoyed that more than the students though!”

Swimming with Manta Rays

A magical moment came in the waters off Hawaii’s coast. “Swimming with the manta rays was also a highlight. They got so close and were truly majestic.”

Travelling with Students

While educational trips create incredible memories, they also come with unique challenges. For Chris, one of the biggest was ensuring students were ready for each day’s activities.

“Ensuring that they get enough sleep to enjoy the next day’s activities!” Despite the occasional late night, the students thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

“I think for the younger students, the whole experience of travelling, staying in a hotel room with their friends, seeing some amazing sites and having some fun experiences all rolled into one was the highlight.”

Whether it was the adventure activities, natural wonders or simply the excitement of travelling abroad with friends, there was something memorable for everyone.

The Reward of Seeing Geography Come to Life

As a Geography teacher, Hawaii offered Chris a unique opportunity to experience first-hand many of the places and processes he has spent years teaching about.

“Getting to see somewhere I have taught about a lot but never experienced before, it is as amazing as you think.”

Advice for Teachers Considering a Trip Abroad

For teachers thinking about organising their own international school trip, Chris has a simple message:

“If you think you will have the numbers, then go for it. It will be tiring and stressful at times, but it’s worth it for sure.”

After all, some of the most valuable lessons happen far beyond the classroom walls - and for Chris and his students, Hawaii delivered an experience they’ll remember for years to come.
